Mae was an exceptional teacher of mine who not only instilled a love of children's literature in me, but also enlightened my little naive student mind. When I moaned about a surprise quiz not being fair, she smiled at me, and with a twinkle in her eye, gently told me that life isn't fair. The class laughed, but that special moment of teaching remained with me throughout the years.
