When I arrived at the Library School in June, 1968, I was firmly fixed on being an academic librarian. When my advisor suggested that I take Children's Literature in my Fall Quarter, I was surprised and kind of offended (boy was I snobbish and stuffy then!) that I, a college grad, would take a course in Children's Literature! How wrong I turned out to be. Ms. Benne not only showed me that there was nothing sweet and cute about children books but that they could be every bit as entertaining as anything else. She began by getting me to read Charlotte's Web, something I had not done up until then. I was hooked. I then went on the read the Narnia series, which I also loved. Since then I always keep track of what's coming out in the field of children's literature. Ms. Benne was a life-changer for me.
